Although not a firm right, IFP status is granted by courts with the liberal application of statutes to on-the-ground, financial realities. Opening the courthouse doors to all litigants, IFP status still is not without its risks, specifically the delayed but binding bill at the end of unsuccessful litigation. Nonetheless, the privilege is a lifeline to many Louisiana litigants, preserving court access and due process by providing the basic services of court operation.
